It’s holiday time at last so while I’m away in Australia please click on the link and try the lesson on the weather. This is meant as further listening and word practise for lesson 8 - the ESLTV News report about the heatwave in Europe.

Another new lesson. This time a news program aimed mainly at intermediate students. This will be mainly listening with shorter online and PDF exercises than the other lessons. There is also a video, mp3 listening file to download for each episode. Enjoy the show!

There are some useful words and expressions to learn below.

throughout - all over

heatwave - a period of unusually hot weather

~straight (day) - continuous

emergency services - police, fire, ambulance

related - connected with

patients - sick people in a hospital

break down - break

majority - most

population - number of people in a (country)

to book - to reserve (a room)

weather forecast - give information about future weather events

This is the first lesson in an animated series about Edward Ulysses Cator - a teacher from Britain who moves to the USA to take up a new job. These stories are aimed at beginner level students and will relate Edward’s experiences adapting to his new life and job in America. As with other lessons on this site there will be a video, mp3 listening file and PDF lesson to download for each episode. Enjoy the show!

fast asleep - sleeping deeply

journey - a trip somewhere

lazy bones - lazy person

make the bed - prepare the bed

breakfast - the morning meal

a bit - a little

get stuck in - to start doing something

hit the spot - delicious

washing up liquid - used for washing dishes

Phew! - expression to express tiredness, surprise or disgust

weak - opposite of strong
